Man Who Acquired Hope Diamond for Smithsonian, George Switzer, Dies at 92
The man who launched the Smithsonian Institution's gems and minerals collection by acquiring the legendary Hope Diamond, died on March 23. George Switzer, a mineralogist, was 92. His son revealed the cause of death was pneumonia, as reported by The New York Times.

Among the jewels to be offered in Christie's upcoming New York Sale on April 16 will be a 27.91 carat rectangular cut D color diamond ring and a 21.09 carat pear shaped D color diamond ring, both by Harry Winston and both expected to realize $2-3 million each.
