Fancy Vivid Blue Fetches $1.6 Million per Carat at Auction

IDEX Online News) – Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite in Hong Kong resulted in a very high total result, with the top item, an 8.01-carat emerald-cut fancy vivid blue diamond, fetching $12.72 million.

The blue diamond’s hammer price represented the second highest price per carat for a blue diamond at auction, eclipsed only by a 6.01-carat fancy vivid blue diamond sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong last October for $10.14 million ($1.69 million p/c).

The second top item at the auction was an 18.11 carat round D / FL triple excellent diamond with a hammer price of $4 million.

Two unusual fancy color diamonds, a 5.03 carats shield-shaped fancy vivid pink and a 5-carat fancy vivid blue rose cut diamond, have not found a buyer. The two diamonds were estimated at $5.4-$6.7 million and $4-$4.5 million, respectively, making them the second and third highest estimated items at the auction.

The Tuesday sale totaled $64 million.
