555.55-carat Black Diamond to be Auctioned in February

Auction house Sotheby’s Dubai has revealed a rare 555.5 carats black diamond called Enigma. The diamond is believed to have come from outer space and was considered by GIA as the largest natural fancy black diamond in the world in 2004, and listed in the 2006 Guinness Book of World Records as the largest cut diamond in the world.

The diamond will go on sale next month in London after being shown in Dubai and Los Angeles, becoming the largest black naturally faceted diamond to be put up for auction. Due to it’s extreme rarity, Sotheby expects that the price will reach between $4.1 and $6.8 million.

According to Sotheby’s the theme of five appears in several ways in the stone including its size of 555.5 carats, containing 55 facets and having the shape of the arabic palm symbol of the Hamsa which also means five.
