Recently a 6.18 carat round brilliant was submitted to the International Gemological Institute, IGI, in Thailand for verification. The diamond was accompanied by a GIA grading report stating it was a natural diamond, D color, flawless clarity, and triple-excellent cut, but upon analysis IGI identified it was a lab grown diamond.
The frauders were very meticulous in having designed the lab grown diamond to match exactly all measurements reported on the certificate, and even laser-inscribed the stone with the GIA report number.
